HELP: What does a failing idler pully SOUND like?

Hi.
I have spent a lot of time and dollars on my car (1996 2.3 900s AT) in the past year and you would think it would be grateful, but NOOOOO....it has so much stuff renewed that it should be humming...instead it is whining/grumbling.
the serp belt looks okay (was replaced 25,000 miles ago) not cracked. but the noise SEEMS to be coming from that direction.
The noise is a SHHHHH. SHHHHH SHHHH along with kind of a unlubricated wheels turning (not a high pitched squeel, but a mid range whirring i guess you would call it).
The belt feels tight (don't worry, i tested that with the engine OFF and cold), and I have heard so much talk of idler pulleys here over the years that I just feel like it MUST be my turn? but also think that's not exactly a scientific reason for thinking that now is it? can't take it to the dealer and say, "bbs folks have bad idler pulleys, so change mine."
but does this sound right? the idler pulley has never been replaced and I'm at 128,000 miles now. is this something saab should pay for? if not, how much will a dealer or indie charge (roughly)? and finally how hard (1 to 4 beers ;) i mean, wrenches) is it to change yourself (and how much for the parts)???
thank you!!!!
Tom.
