When Bill said brief period, he's not kidding, it could be as brief as a few dozen miles. Mine went from nothing to 'shh-shh' to near-total seizure in about 75 miles. I wouldn't drive it unless you have a good plan for towing it. When you lose the pulley, you lose the water pump (thus the bit about the blown gasket/engine overheat).
If you stop the car there, it's harmless. (Well, if the pulley melts, there's a mess, especially if it gets on other pulleys). But even a short distance w/o water pump can set up the expensive repair months or years down the road.
