airbox vs. cone

Let's face it, you're not going to see a huge improvement from one setup to the next. Each will have a marginal benefit over stock, but it's still only going to be a couple of HP.
I tried to create the ultimate setup by using a 3" aluminum pipe, curved 90 degrees and ending with a cone filter in the hole between the splash guard and foglight. How did I get it in there? I cut the sheet metal where the hole already exists under the airbox (already removed) and fit the filter on the pipe from underneath once I remove the splash guard.
Was it worth it? Well, the pipe ALWAYS feels cool to the touch so I'm sucking in fresh air at a significantly higher rate than stock, and it makes a very blow-off valve-like sound between shifts, not to mention that it whistles a hell of a lot when the boost kicks in (I also have the intake silencer removed). I've driven through rain and the filter stayed dry, so no problems there.
That's not to say the car is a rocket now. I have more problems with hitting the fuel cutoff as it gets cooler outside (MBC) and subjectively, it didn't make the kind of substantial perf. gain I was kinda hoping for given the increase in airflow.
In the final analysis, I would say go for the cone-style filter if you like lots of intake noise, otherwise go for the modded airbox.
