well, ok, not nobody, but very few want to find out. The wireless industry rightly or wrongly certainly doesn't want to raise the issue but questions have been asked at the highest level.
First, my disclaimer, I'm not with the wireless industry, nor do I work with microwave devices, nor do I know much about biology, you know, kinda like the song....Don't know much about biology, algera, trigonometry.... But I do own two Saabs currently.
As my usual paranoid brain would suggest, the cellphone is essentially a tiny microwave device. Yes, it radiates microwave just like the inside of a microwave oven. No, it isn't as powerful as the smallest microwave oven you can find, but you are sticking your head next to the antenna each time you talk. So your exposure is up close and personal so to speak.
The power from the antenna drops off very quickly as the inverse of the square of the distance, i.e. inverse square law for EM waves. So if you can position the antenna away from you, either by using a headset, or a car cradle etc., that would reduce your exposure. Of course, your headset wire acts as a wave guide as well, so someone would suggest ferrite beads to further cut down on the radiation (similar to those clamp on filters for computers or powerline cables).
There have been studies but no conclusive results that I've seen on cellphone radiation (try Google). Again, my paranoid brain would suggest that cellphones haven't been around that long to get a good cummulative effect of microwave radiation. Think of how long it took for people to expose and prove the effects of abestos, DDT and tobacco. If we are talking about cummulative radiation exposure, then it may take a very very long time for any negative effect to emerge. The hard part is that we can't see microwave while we can see abestos dust, chemicals and tobacco smoke. I'm sure any low level biological damage due to microwave would get repaired by the body unless there is consistent or high level exposure. So we might see some isolated extreme cases but hardly enough to prove any theory conclusively.
Cordless phones are safer, they use a lower frequency, hence not as energetic. I won't worry that much about cordless phones as many are not on until you pick them up.
However, I would think about where you put your wireless router antenna, your wireless computer devices, your WiFi antenna, especially if you have directional antenna. In particular, if you have these things in your kids room, I would put them away from their beds. I have a teenage daughter that tends to talk a lot on the cellphone, and I would remind her that she is microwaving her brain......and she should use the land line instead.
There have been a number of studies on EM radiation from high voltage power lines, and again, the results are not conclusive. Here, we have high level of EM radiation but low frequency. You can Google the studies as well.
I think there are more people get killed or hurt from drivers who are on their cellphones than we would see from microwave exposure.
So, use your cellphone but minimize your exposure. Yes, I have a cellphone and I use it. I don't like to clip the phone to my belt either. I believe the cellphone still radiates on standby. I don't like the idea of having a radiative device so close to my stomach.....8-). You know many more people are getting pancreatic cancer....would that be cellphone related ...ok...major paranoia....
Oh, I don't answer my cellphone while I drive.
