I work in the wireless/microwave business but not cell phone business.
There's no conclusive proof typical use causes health problems or that cell towers cause problems, but people are free to be cautious. I don't worry about it, but don't use the cell phone for more than 10 minutes a day anyhow.
The radiation is a warming radiation, not a sterilizing/nuking radiation like radon or uranium, and is not cumulative. The heat sensation is probably from just from the electronics working and getting themselves warm in the process, or the insulating value of the plastic parts.
Ferrite will just turn the electric radiation into magnetic radiation, which is still related. Most of the inexpensive "solutions" are probably bogus and capitalize on people's uneducated fear.
As someone mentioned, energy levels dissapate according to the inverse square law, meaning doubling the distance from the head decreases energy 4x.
The only way to keep radio energy away from your skull is to use an separate external antenna on a cable, a car kit, or a wired headset.
Cellphone is comparable power output to wifi, but at a lower frequency. Wifi is the same frequency as a microwave oven. Cordless phone is usually the least powerful.
