There have been many, many studies on the health/safety issues of RF radiation. Naturally, the manufacturers' views are biased (see link for Motorola's stance, I'm sure their competition have similar information available as well), but you can bet that the litigious atmosphere of the US would have produced some result by now if there was conclusive evidence, more so than Europe. I'm not stating that risk does not exist (how can I?), but it has not been conclusively proven.
I am not currently employed by Motorola, but am very aware of the history of cellular. They pretty much invented the concept of handheld portable cell phones, had 0.3 watt (compared to about a half of that power now) handsets in use on live systems in 1981, and produced working devices long before their competition - especially the Europeans. The widespread and visible popularity of cellular in Europe has many causes, not the least of which is the billing scheme of "calling party pays" which encourages people to give out their cellphone number freely and leave their device "on" at all times.
