I have 802.11a running with 128 bit encryption - 256 is a bit overkill for a home network and use specific MAC addresses.
Once I got a wireless card for laptop I can never go back!
Funny though...I travel all the time with my laptop and wireless card. I can almost always find a network to hop on. I was in Philly for Thanksgiving in one of the row houses in Society Hill -- Sure enough I had high speed interenet access despite my relatives having a connection;) Gotta love it.
It also helps to lock down all the PCs in your house wireless or not. Most people never even setup a simple login on their PCs and most leave the default router login - both are big no nos.....
