802.11a is rated for about 50mpbs. "Turbo" mode is actually full-duplex and while the effect is 100mpbs of traffic, you still only have half that bandwidth in each direction. Besides that, this equipment is relatively expensive and at 5GHz does not have *nearly* the wall-penetrating power that a more conventional 900MHz or 2.4GHz radio will get you. Remember, the higher the frequency the shorter the range at equivalent power levels. And, unfortunately, you can't bump up your power output without a license - the FCC is pretty strict about those things. 802.11a really is not optimal for home/indoor use, especially if walls or floors are involved. And *forget* about it if you have to beam traffic through a bathroom or kitchen. And, finally, one thing to consider about 802.11a in a laptop is that is uses up to 40% more power than a traditional 802.11b card.
Anyway, my point is, that if you've got the opportunity to wire a house, wire the house. Wireless is not anywhere close to competing with 100BaseT in speed or latency, or cost. For the couple hundred bucks it would cost an electrician to do a bunch of ethernet drops and some modular jacks, it's well worth it.
