Yes, times have changed. But consider that many of the changes are for the better. Cars have gotten far more reliable, efficient, and safe; and that means more weight. To compensate, most cars also come with increased power. For example, the Boxster is no slouch. Sure it’s heavy but it's an absolute blast to drive (especially in 'S' trim).
That said, here is my short list:
- Panoz AIV Roadster: ~2500lbs, ~305 hp V8. Made until 1999, with a 1998 or '99 the best year to find. Consider it a modern day Cobra. Lots of fun to drive but a summer car only. Prices are around $35-40k now.
- Boxster: The British TV show Fifth Gear named the Boxster S as their favorite sports car. Easy to drive, plentiful inventory (new and used).
- MazdaSpeed Miata: good mix of reliability, price, and moderate performance. Easy to live with.
- Lotus Elise: still one of my favorites but I think I would have a hard time pulling the trigger – just too extreme for any long distance drive. I think this is a car that would get old very quickly if driven on the streets.
