Lotus has always made ultra-light sports cars compared to the rest of the market. Even back in the 60's, if an Elan was too heavy there was always a Super 7.
I would certainly include Miatas and Toyota MR2 Spyder in your quest, especially the now discontinued MR2 Spyder. Older MR2's are a kick if you can still find a nice one.
