Toyota has a pretty good history with performance cars, although they largely abandoned that market in the mid '90s. They dropped the "good" Corolla GTSs in the early 90s, the MR2, then the Supra. The kept the Celica for a good long while, but even that got dropped to be "replaced" (I use that term lightly) with the Scion tC.
Over the years they've happily replaced all those cars with trucks, which just proves they saw the writing on the wall with sports cars and moved quickly to build what people wanted.
The new Lexus semi-exotic looks to be nothing short of fantastic, but I think that's going to be their sole entry for a while. I don't think there's much of a market for true sports cars in America, especially when a supercharged Camry gets the job done for most consumers...
