Ever since I was in college (well, my first car was a Beetle 'vert), I owned Hondas...a Civic and various model years of the Accord. I've never liked Toyota products and that continues to this day. Perhaps the only Toyata product that appeals is the Lexus RX, but even that's a well disguised Camry underneath, plus it's an SUV...ick. Honda at least engineered some sporty handling characteristics into their cars.
Then I came to Saab, first with a '97 900SET. It wasn't the most maintenance free of relationships, but it had soul. My '02 9-5 Aero wagon was great even with some of the interior bits that were a bit lacking in quality - a solid, fun reliable and unique car. This Web site helped convert me as well...so much so that I bought a summer driver -- a pristine '92 900 Turbo 'vert. (Wish is wasn't in winter hibernaton in Delaware as I could have used it on Saturday in DC's 75 degrees). I've looked at Acura over the years and have always been impressed by the TSX, but never pulled the switch. Again, there's just something sterile about it. I know I'd enjoy it, but it wouldn't push all the "wow" buttons. Now I'm glad to be in my 9-3 Aero SportCombi. There are things I like about it immensely and other items that could be improved, but it gives me pride of ownership and I'm not sure Japanese makes could really win me over that way. Sure, they'd likely be more reliable, but that's only one part of the equation for me. They make a very good product -- I agree with you about Mazda. Ford has done something right there. And Infiniti had come into its own. Saab is owed that chance. GM is making great strides -- let's hope this applies to our beloved brand...there's a great heritage to work from.
