I'm certainly not arguing the usefulness of the APC - I run it on all of my Saabs, and the '90 SPG is the first one I'm going to run without. I mean, I spent HOURS wiring it into my 5-door because I do believe it serves a purpose. But the knock sensor is a primative device and subject to all sorts of errant "detection." Timing chain rattle, primary chain rattle, other rattles. Going over bumps. Sometimes it just gets pissy. Besides that, modern boost controllers have a number of features which I personally believe to be useful, not the least of which is multiple preset boost limits, and gear-dependent boost limits. Jay has chosen a manual controller, but is also running 16psi which is not too terribly high and probably well within reason for even an otherwise stock completely stock c900T.

For the SPG, I think an EGT and good A:F meter are going to provide me with enough information to know when I am in danger of knock, and I'm willing to rely on that. The EGT alone should tell me if I'm detonating. If I've done the right work in the garage and on the dyno, I should be able to tune max boost to match with other mods to provide engine safety, and a reliable car. Of course, that's all speculation, but I think by and large true. Enough cars out there run high boost without the benefit of APC to lead me to believe it may be an extra step I don't need to take. I've never once had bad gas from the three stations I use, and the SPG is certainly *not* going to be a hit-the-highway car... jesus... an hour in that car is enough to loosen your fillings! I will be installing EZK (or possibly just using TECII...) on the car to help deal with sponenteous knock (altitude, bad gas, randomness), and I believe that is adequate protection. I'd rather have my ignition timing dinged than lose a few psi *any day*.

My thoughts... we'll see. Of course, none of this is gonna happen in the immediate future, as I have promised my roommate to get the 99T running. I know, I talk a lot for a guy who isn't actually *doing* anything... :)
