Like p-loc said, motorcycle systems are different that car systems because for a motorcycle the driver has the same number of inputs/outputs as the ABS. And we're not talking about motorcycles. Frankly I'm very surprised to be having this conversation in the year 2004. All this ABS discussion is water under the bridge at this point, and has been for many years. In any case, there have been many many studies that demonstrate that ABS will hands-down beat any human most of the time on finished, non-cluttered surfaces in all conditions. To repeat, I'm not saying that ABS will outperform a skilled driver on loose surfaces where particulate can be pushed in front of the tire--but even that's not out of the question with a properly developed task specific system. In any case,

I was about to take advantage of my SAE membership and get ahold of some reference papers to quote on here but decided better of it. There are more than a few papers available though if you're interested, this looks like it might be a good one to start:
-SAE Tehnical Document #880324 "Comparing Stopping Capability of Cars With and Without Anti-Lock Braking Systems (Abs)" (a little old, from 1988)

Because I decided that the burden of proof and distillation is not mine, and much faster, easier, and cheaper for me than writing a Paper on this bulletin board, just do a quick Google search if you have doubts. Here's some quick links I found in about 5 minutes of searching:

A page put-together by a guy who looks like he knows what he's talking-about, where one of the topics of discussion is the advantage that a multichannel setup has over a single input/output and why. Also a little background on how ABS works:

http://www.geocities.com/nosro/abs_faq/

Since you didn't address my agrument concerning ABS use in racing, here's an interesting quote from this guy's page that supports exactly what I said, "Finally, for race enthusiasts, who still do not believe me, I would like to point out the fact that ABS has been introduced in nearly all major forms of asphalt racing (such as Formula 1) and subsequently banned. These are the most skilled drivers in the world, yet ABS proved to be too much of a competitive advantage against non-ABS equipped cars, hence the ban." Here here!

or another study,

Or, back to NA, here's a good public one from SAE for the highway administration:

(***address for link not allowed for some reason, click my name and I'll email you the link if you're interested***)

On a side note, I've always felt like one of the best automotive related resources for the automotive enthusiast is SAE. Their website is good, and most of the newer papers are instantly downloadable at a discount for members. Membership is tax-deductible most of the time and they even throw in some really great magazine subscriptions when you join/renew; sometimes the reading is a little on the dry side, but it's good cutting-edge info non-theless.

Hope the above helps to clear-up any confusion.
