Vigge, I'm not trying to debate anything, honest. I'm trying to reconcile what I've observed with how the thing is supposed to function. I'm trying to figure-out which is the limiting factor and when. And I'm not trying to say that this isn't a mass-based system.
I can't read the numbers but it looks like boost follows power output up until around 3500 rpm?
From observation in my car, and it may be different in a 2.3 as compared to a 2.0, when I go to WOT in 3rd, charge pressure goes to around 14-15 and maintains until, like you said, the turbo can't flow enough to maintain that pressure and begins to fall-off. Yes, the mass flow will vary dependant-upon altitude and ambient temperature---BUT, if you take a look at the actual effective measurement range of the MAF, assume some efficiencies, and throw measured HP into the mix, the mass measuerment is only capable over about half of the entire engine operating range.
CJH and I ran some numbers and the stock MAF sensor can only read to around 220 cfm (around 8158 cycles/sec, depending upon density of course) while my engine can throughput around 430 cfm.
After the flow exceeds the measurement range of the MAF sensor, how is engine output controlled? Is the MAF output linear through-out it's operating range? Are the OBD numbers corrected to account-for those non-linearities? Those are things I've been considering. I really appreciate your writing on the subject.
