Tim,
You are right about the MAF being a problem. According to my friend at Saab, they have been aware of the problem for quite some time. Evidentally, Saab/GM feels that audible ping is enough of a warning for people to have their car serviced. We know that isn't true, as most people don't even recognize knock when they hear it. If the MAF sensor fails, it will lean out cylinder #1, and only cylinder #1. My buddy at SCUSA said to be careful with higher mileage or neglected T-7 cars, an listen for knock. If you hear any knock, pull the plugs and look for blistering on cylinder #1. If it's considerably whiter than the others, replace the MAF immediately. That's the official course of action from the barn.
Then all you have to worry about the early crappy software, DI failures and Cat replacements, Sludging, valve float, potential blind oil pump failures(per Chuck Andrews), crappy PCV design, clogged pick-up screens, crappy pistons... it makes me feel lucky to keep my 9-5 running good stock, let alone modify it. I wish one of the Swedish tuners would come up with a T-5 retrofit harness! :o)
