It doesn't matter if it is a different engine in the 9-5, (it could be
a Ford!) it is still a 'V-6' and the assertion stated (somewhat
misguided) was that they stopped selling the NG900 V6
because consumers didn't want it....

If that were the case, why would their attitude change for the 9-5?
To be fair, the 9-3 doesn't come with a V6. But you can't buy
a 9-5 SE with a 4 cylinder for the 2000 MY. (You can get
a plain 4 cyl 9-5 fitted with a premium pack though).

The tech at Barrier who married my CD changer and sound system
was quite complimentary about the 9-5 V6 and how they are no
problem. Most of the problems in the NG900 were due to
people who flogged the cars and skipped the maintenance
(except for the pulley problem which was a TSB only the 94
models only). This observation based on discussions with
three different dealers.

Though a Saab dealer in Minnesota that told me about a 94
that let go at 1,000 miles and Saab just gave the lady a new
car. :)

Maybe the belt would last 60,000 miles, I guess they're playing it safe
and they cover the cost of the first few. And how long will a chain last?
And what is the cost of replacing a chain, guides and sprockets when
it does go? They do each have their pros and cons. I don't think
belts are inherently bad. The average American consumer can't seem
to fathom the idea that there is some maintenance that MUST
be done at a certain interval.

FWIW I used to replace my RS2000 cam belts at 40,000km,
just in case. Of course on the Pinto engine it is about a 10
minute job, if that!! A belt on a V engine is more work.

Many high performance engines (e.g. Cosworth) use a belt,
too. They even retrofitted a belt drive to an engine (BDA)
that was originally chain driven (in pushrod 8 valve guise)!

I'm in the middle of the Saab 9-5 book and it is a great read.
Just picked up my slide out cargo floor and retractable rear divider
net. More weekend fun!

I also finally received my copy of the new Saab magazine in the
mail. I guess buying a new car did the trick. 7 or 8
phone calls didn't work...
