This is what my dealer said too and I think it is a fair deal. They
have to disassemble a fair bit of the engine to replace
the plugs for the major services and it just makes it easier to
do it all at the same time. Be sitting down for the price of
V6 plugs!!!

I bought a 1996 900SE V6 new, and have about 70,000 miles on it.
It has been absolutely trouble free, except that the alternator
died and had to be replaced; can't blame this on the 'engine,' though.

At 70K, it runs as well as it did when new; no sign of burning oil,
no rattles or other noises from the engine compartment.

A nice thing about the 900 V6 is that it includes ALL the options;
seat warmers, leather interior, sunroof, foglampes, etc.

As far as whether the dealer ought to replace the drive belt
free of charge even if you're not getting the service performed,
the warranty booklet that comes with the car says:

'The camshaft drive belt on 900 models with V6 engine is scheduled
to be replaced at 35,000, 65,000 and 95,000 service intervals.
Replacement of the belt and the labor associated with the replacement
is free of charge and must be performed by an authorized Saab dealer.
The remaining cost of the 35,000, 65,000 and 95,000 mile service(s) is
the owner's responsibility.'

No indication here that you must by the rest of the service to get
the belt replaced.

But, to keep your warranty valid, you are REQUIRED to have the belt replaced
by an authorized Saab dealer (unlike other maintenance, which can be performed
anywhere without invalidating the warranty.)

My understanding is that dealers may not require you to pay for service AT
THE DEALER
in order to keep your warranty in force; if Saab is requiring you to pay
the dealer
for the accompanying service in order to get the 'free' belt change which is
required to keep your warranty in force, and which must be done at the dealer
to keep your warranty in force, that sounds an awful lot like what
antitrust lawyers
would call an 'illegal tying arrangement' to me: they are essentially
saying: (1) your warranty is voided unless you get the timing belt changed
at the dealer. (2) you must pay the dealer for the accompanying service
if you'd like to get your timing belt changed. Resulting in: (3) You must
buy your 35K and 65K service at the dealer if you wish to avoid voiding
your warranty,
which, if that's Saab's position, sounds illegal to me.
