After I manufactured this spacer out of an water pump sprocket and tack welded it to the Saab factory tool, I haven't had any problems with the chain tensioner skip a beat. It was just too much slop in the tool allowing the sprocket to tilt ever so slightly when the pump was removed.
BUT??? With all the stories now about balance chain guide and tensioners failing, yes it seems to be more prudent to remove the timing cover instead.
But that also brings with it to maybe sell a serpentine belt and tensioner if it has not been done already bringing the price even higher on an already high priced repair making everyone think you're a crook since "honest Harry" down the street can throw a water pump in for nothing.
What to do?
