The last sentence of your question was also your answer. You are not quite right about the V-6 having a lot more potential and the 2.3 four being at the end of it's development. Try reversing those statements, and you will be a lot closer. At 250 HP, the Aero engine is running very comfortably. It's bottom end has more bearing surface area than a small block Chevy V-8. The V-6 as it is produced in single turbo form, is a nice negine, but just about out of steam at that HP and Torque specification. As for the refinement issue, some of that is subjective, and some of it can be quantified. I feel that the v-6 is slightly smoother mechanically, but much more raucous and rough under open throttle conditions. The intake manifold is the possible culprit here.Induction noise is among the loudest that I have heard. Some might actually like this type of sound. Drive a modern BMW and you will hear similar sounds. They intentionally tune them that way to give you the boy racer "VROMM, VROMM" type of sound when you stand on it.
For my preferences, the 2.3 Aero motor is a lot nicer sounding, and the motor even fells smoother when coupled to the new five speed auto transmision.
The 2.3 started life as a racing design, and it's reliability record speaks for itself.
Technology is a rapidly moving target when it comes to auto engines. In the next few years you will see even more interesting technology under the hood of your Saab, some of which has already been made public.
