I agree with most of what you said, for sure. However, I just think that Saab produced the V6 to be the "mid-pack" engine (to satisfy US buyers of traditional V6's). I think that the engine could have a lot more potential if it was modified and blown more extensively.
For example, in the Cadillac (Opel) Catera, the engine makes 200 HP with NO turbo! For the CTS (new Catera) the engine is enlarged to 3.2 liters, but makes 220 HP! That is without turbocharging. In the Saturn LS cars, it is just shy of 190 HP (again with no turbo).
I would think, if you compare to other manufacturers' (Audi for one) turbo V-6s (some of which are smaller displacement) that you should be able to get 250-270 HP out of the V-6 if it was turbocharged and intercooled (though I am obviously not an expert in this area - just trying to use common sense).
I don't think it makes sense for Saab to put any more ooomph into the V6, as 200 is enough for most tastes, and the little turbo they put in makes it "a saab engine" (that way at least they can call it a turbo anyway - a Saab tradition).
I like my V6 - it sounds pretty good, and it runs very strong, all the way up to speeds well over 100 MPH
