Mike....
The front grills on the dash do pop out quite easily ... though I'm not sure of the actual speaker size in use.. they appear to be around a 3.5" speaker.. but I would double check as I looked at it very briefly.
The thing you need to be careful of if replacing the existing in-dash speakers is the impedance rating ...I do seem to recall reading on an older archived entry that these dash speakers may be rated somewhere around 2 or 2.5 ohms as opposed to the usual 4 ohms. If that's really the case, then simply replacing them with a standard 4ohm replacement speaker could cause you some balance/soundstage problems, particularly with respect to the center dash and front door speakers, as I don't think there is any way to alter the volume setting of one without affecting the others up front, but I may be wrong.
In terms of the quality of the existing system, my impression is that the system seems to work quite well reproducing classical music and most jazz... but sometimes seems a little harsh or overly bright with popular music. I've also thought about replacing the front dash speakers.. but I keep going back and forth as to whether or not it would be worth it...
Does the BMW system you mention have a full range rear deck or does it use a subwoofer ?
