This was before acquiring the 9-5 wagon, but my wife, six-year-old daughter and I drove her new 215HP Town & Country from St. Louis to San Diego/Disneyland and back (5300 miles) last April/May for 16 days. While driving a 9-5 wagon would have been a great experience, we were very comfy in the T&C by taking out the third seat to make room for all of my wife's and daughter's stuff, my one little duffel, a fairly large ice chest, pillows, etc. We got 23 mpg and averaged 80 mph on the Interstates. What was beneficial vs. if we had taken a wagon was the amount of room inside and having an entertainment system for my daughter - a real lifesaver and well worth the investment just on that one trip. I had a 20 mpg Toyota 4-Runner Limited that I replaced with the wagon. A very solid trouble-free vehicle, but I'm just getting too old (60) to be climbing up into a beast like that!
