see the link below. However, it's still not done on a per unit basis, which makes these statistics useless. For instance, if there were 55 injury claims for the Saab 9-5 for 100 vehicles, but 76 injury claims for 200 BMW 3-series 4-doors, then the Saab is ("is" is always debatable with statistics) less safe than the 3-series, even though the numbers are the other way around.
Plus, they removed "non-vehicle factors" from the analysis, which means that a bunch of 50 year olds could drive the Saab, while 24 year olds drive the 3-series. Statistically, in terms of numbers of accidents, the former are involved in less accidents than the latter. So, the injuries could simply be because there's "better" drivers in 9-5s than in 3-series BMWs (or older people drive fewer miles, or drive safer because they have kids in the car, or...).
Anyway, this just shows that this data is possibly irrelevant as to actual safety. It solely shows how much money is being paid out by insurance companies for various claims. Does the amount paid out for claims for a car provide a basis for determining the relative safety of cars? I'm reluctant to believe this, particularly when the data seems to be "gross" and not divided on a per unit basis.
