There are din sized GPS system with moving map displays that should be able to fit in the space where your radio is now housed, and typically they work by storing the display screen in a horizontal fashion until they are operated. This would mean giving up the factory radio that you now have. It also would mean that when the GPS screen is out and in position, you would loose site of the SID, and possibly block the air outlets above them.
Best bet is to go to a good auto radio store and ask if they have installed one in a 9-5. Then ask to speak to that car's owner, and see how it really works out.
I believe that there is a true paranoia within GM regarding ancillary equipment that could cause driver distraction. They even made Saab stop offering the mobile phone holders that used to be in the accessory catalog.
Seems kind of strange to me that they claim to be promoting driver safety and awareness on one hand, and making most of their profits off of clumsy ill handling, top heavy SUVs,which are far more likely to cause an accident than a Saab with a GPS nav system,or hands free cell phone.
