We had had very positive experiences, both with VW (87 GTI, 93 EuroVan) and with Saab (88 9000T). The 9-5 and Passat we looked at in 99 were extremely close in room and function. The new Passat would cost $7-8K LESS than the new 9-5, while providing all the room and much of the sense of sport. My wife spent a Saturday morning doing a back-to-back drive-off. We took delivery of our 9-5 that afternoon!
No doubt--the Passat is a great car at a great price.
But the 9-5 offers something extra: style, flair, refinement, sport, design, power...you can quantify it in some ways, but in others, it's intangible, though nonetheless real. The interior design, in particular, shows a world of difference: pedestrian Passat vs. 9-5's world-class design & beauty.
That's how it came out for us, anyway.
The 9-5 and Passat are really working different markets and different purposes. If you're looking purely at cubic feet measurement, the Passat will do you right--again, it's a fine car. But if you want something more, at a whole different level, the 9-5 will satisfy for a long time to come.
