Wife and I also looked at a new Passat wagon before we got our '01 wagon. We liked the Passat alot-great price and value for the money. Almost got one, too-but when comparing lease rates at the time, the SAAB became a more economical value (with all the incentives going on last October).
A friend of ours with the VW loved it, but told us that he wished it had rear A/C vents for the rear seats. Very important item to have if you have kids and live in an area that experiences hot summers. I live in the Deep South, so it became a major consideration. Unlike a car, a wagon has all that extra interior space that needs to be cooled-and the more vents, the better. Also helps that our wagon has the vented seats option! :-)
Other negatives about the VW: Obnoxious blue/red dash lighting is atrocious at night, IMO. Radio buttons were too small, hard to decipher-you'll get in a wreck trying to figure them out. That's about it.
The Volvo wagons were nice, too-but pricey. Not as many incentives as the SAAB had. The base V70 is a stripper. I'd personally skip the XC model and go for the more powerful T5. If the XC had the T5's engine, it'd be a different story. Then again, I'd get the Aero! :-)
