and I can see why Consumer Reports (and others) are in love with this car, as an affordable family sedan/wagon.
But it's no 9-5.
The model I drove was a GLX (V-6) with Tiptronic. They had no wagons, and no manuals on the lot. Very nice car, for the money.
I started considering Passat Wagon almost one year ago, signed up for an email list and hung out on their bullentin board. I was scared away from them by the (apparently) very frequent electrical problems that brand new Passats were having. Volkswagon increased their warranty for 2002, so I considered them again.
I test drove 2002 Linear SportWagon (auto), then a few days later test drove 2002 Aero sedan (auto). I'm still grinning from the Aero, but my recollection of the Linear would be that it is a different class from Passat, especially in handling, which is very important to me. I don't know about 4-speed auto, but I would take '01 9-5 over new Passat.
