agree with MarkJump...Passat and 9-5 are different cars targeting different markets. Passat more comparable to a 9-3 (at least when comparing sedans)
I have not test driven the new 02 Passats, last Passat I drove was a 99 wagon - and it was not very inspiring..I was impressed that VW was able to create a larger more refined car though....
Passat actually has slightly larger cargo area -- per EPA -- but passenger area is smaller.
Other day I was in a new car showroom with an 02 Passat GLS and 01 9-5 next to each other. No comparison at zero miles per hour. I felt the 9-5 had a better fit and finish, was more luxurious, and visually had a more refined look. Passat seemed solid - but what does solid really means these days: much of the "solid" impression comes from 2 things -- 1) what the door sounds like when you slam it (mostly acoustic engineering I bet), 2) the lines of the car as..as if it was built from a single ingot of steel...to me solid = durability and longevity.
good luck
