I like the idea of the car up on stands, so the owner is inclined to get under there and look after all the other things that may need attention. To me, this is the #1 reason why a 20,000 mile change interval is just too long.

I am not looking at anyone here, but I know a couple people who change oil and filter, oil and filter, and never get around to doing anything else. Sometimes it makes better sense IMO to drain and fill 4 quarts from the transmission and save the oil and filter change for later. Or, take a few extra minutes and pull the right side yoke and engine mount off and really inspect that belt. Don't forget the water pump.

Something I want to restate from my earlier post: I'm NOT the role model - I'm the guy who drives almost no "errands" and no commuting and instead makes runs of 400-600 miles without blinking. Consequently my oil is in way better shape after 5,000 miles than anyone could ever expect if they commuted mostly. But if you don't use the car like I do, I'm not, not the role model.

I've got to look after 7 cars, between the girlfriend and I. I drove over 400 miles just today. Another guy is changing his oil and filter, and I replaced a timing belt, replaced a fuel filter and drained and refilled twice (plus transmission pan gasket and filter once) and R + R'd a fuel filter on the Miata. There isn't enough time in the day to do more car stuff than I already do.

We were discussing here, in another thread, whether it still made sense to maintain comprehensive and collision coverage on this generation of 9-5 and some concluded that no, the book value is just too low. I've got four 9-5s; if one leaves me, I'll be OK. I just want some of the guys here to imagine what it will be like when your 9-5, after you changed the oil every 5,000 or 3,000 miles, gets totaled and the insurance company cuts you a check for $ 2,200.00 - or less. I think you have to be at least somewhat pragmatic about this.

Sometimes it makes better sense to change the heater bypass valve instead.
