What's the best tranny lube to use?

I had a hard time shifting the other day in 30 degree weather and it
started to grind when going into 2nd. This is a new tranny (less than
1 year old), and I'd like to keep it (for a while longer). So, what's
the best tranny lubricant (gear oil etc) to use? Thanks. Also, anyway
to prevent the grinding on those cold winter mornings?
