There was a pretty good discussion about this 2nd gear crunch in the cold a month or so back. I've been having same prob. on a low mileage 5-speed, ever since the temps dropped below 40 deg. or so. If I remember right, here's a few ways people deal with this apparently universal problem: (assuming you're already running a good syn tranny oil.
1) double-clutching into 2nd
2) skipping 2nd 'till the engine's nice & warm
3) pausing midway for a sec. before hitting 2nd
4) playing with dif. weight oils
I personally do 2 and 3, which manages it more or less ok. (still catch a tooth or two now & then).
Just lately, I've been moving the shift 1/2 or full way to the right mid-shift and then into 2nd. I "think" it may be shifting better this way but can't be sure & have no idea if it has any mechanical rationale.
If anyone has other/better solutions or reasons why this happens, I'm sure 99% of 5-speed owners in cold climes would love to hear them.
