for high hp/boost .... Posted by Kevin K [Email] (#374) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Kevin K) on Tue, 5 Dec 2000 10:45:13 In Reply to: What's the best tranny lube to use?, BobJ, Tue, 5 Dec 2000 05:55:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
... I think a 75-90 GL5 synthetic is best for bearing and gear lubrication. The GL5 means very high load capacity, and the 75-90 means very good hot viscosity ( like a 10-40 or 10-50 ) . New synths have much less sulfer stuff, so old issue of corrosion of brass is not a problem. The syncros can get too slippery due to the EP stuff in some GL5 oils, so it's best to use a brand that works, based on other's experiences. Many GL5's are just blended for hypoid differential use, not shifting.
I just installed NEO 75-90HD (neosyntheticoil.com) . It is about the only GL5 gear oil that directly recomends use in transaxles where only GL4 (lower EP additive) is specified, like VW, audi, and porsche do/did.
It shifts well in recent 20degf mornings, and shifting is generally very good so far, with less crunch first time into 2nd vs some other oils. I just do an easy load shift from 2500-3000 rpm, with about 1/2 sec delay in neutral position. No crunch.
I had run redline's version (75-90NS GL5), and it was horrible shifting. I've heard than amsoil also works well.
Some motor oils may shift well for some, but don't provide same lubrication for extreme load conditions in high boost/hp conditions.
For very cold climates or more normal car used, Redline MTL (70W80 GL4) gear oil is very popular and works well, and should shift better than any 75-90. I think Honda MTF (75W85 GL4 ?) gear oil would shift very well too.
