Alan, if you replace the coupling don't forget to do the proper adjustment procedure on it. It must be oriented carefully when the clamp is tightened or you can have problems. After reading your posts I still think that your problem originates with the pin at the base of the shift lever. If you can reliably select all forward gears except fifth then it's pretty unlikely that the coupling is torn. When the spring loaded pin is jammed up it only adversely affects fifth gear.
