No, shouldn't have to. But you will need to remove the pin on one end as well as loosen the pinch bolt on the other. Hopefully you're shaft isn't stuck like mine. Then you can slide the coupling toward the motor, put the shifter into third and you should be able (in theory) to get the coupler out with a little effort. Of course nothing is as simple as it sounds. ;-/
