Cmyles is right but there is also a round "Rubber" grommet bushing just ahead of the shift lever that locates the long pipe linkage. If someone used anything but white grease to lube the shift lever and reverse lock (key) parts' that bushing is probably "mush". Petroleum grease is death to that bushing and will cause huge shifting problems.
