That's a widely held, but patently false belief. Saabs are quite reliable and loooooong lived, but: 1)saabs do best under the care of experienced saab mechanics or perfectionist DIY, no hacks will do because the cars are unique and, hell, old! 2)An ill cared for saab is that much more expensive to maintain - this can be big $$$ 3)saab parts and labor tend to be a bit high, *especially* parts 4)saabs often get long in the tooth and you will find yourself paying for repairs that you see less in other makes because *they-never-lived-this-long* - this includes transmissions, clutches, brakes, electric motors, etc. Show me another car that routinely racks up so many miles/years that we commonly have to replace cluch pedals because you've worn out a solid piece of steel! (the clevis pin erodes an elongated hole in the pedal over time).
I have *never* understood the lousy ratings (ie Consumer Reports) the OG900's got when new - I, family, and friends have nothing but love for and great experiences with them.
The car is unique, utilitarian, rugged, safe, and a blast to drive. Note one thing, though: an old used car is an old used car and it will need some work. If you assume, for example, that the saab will require about as much maintanance as another make, know that it will probably cost more for the reasons mentioned above.
