Reliability has been sub ave in the past. Part of this was due to a low sales volume car with limited skilled mechanics, and typical US mechanic turn-over, at the dealers.
Early 80's had poor reliability, on ave. The simple reliable CIS fuel injection was made much more complex with emissions issues. If you bought an 83T, as I did in 85, you could count on a cracked head and cracked pinion bearing carrier before 80K miles. Not cheap fixes. Fell thru the seat and was attacked by headliner prematurely too. Reliability got much better with the newer models, but major trans improvements didn't start till 94.
Once beyond the cracked head days, the basic engine is very well designed, and can go several 100K miles, although lots of fluid leaks can develop.
Buying a used one, unless you carefully inspect it, can yield a basket of problems, like other old cars. Tranny rebuild is the main special risk.
