may remember a spate of auto transmission failures after the owners changed the fluid for the first time in years. As I recall, there was a lot of discussion about a/t failures and many people (myself included) ran out and started changing the transmission fluid like maniacs. Shortly after, a number of a/t's began to fail. The thinking expressed at the time was that the new fluid freed up sludge and sent it circulating through the system. I do remember hearing somewhere else that if the a/t fluid hasn't been changed in 50k miles, it may be better to leave it alone and get as much mileage out of the transmission as you can.
The point here is that automotive systems that are functioning usually have achieved some equilibrium. Adding a new variable, even for the sake of improvement, can exacerbate hidden weaknesses. Along this line, it comes as no surprise to me that adding Bar's Leak to a 15 year old car without cleaning out the cooling system first leads to some trouble. It's not an indictment of the product that this happens. But neither should we deny that it does.
