The bottom ine is that even if you fix everything that is wrong on a 10 year old car, while it may cost you more than the car is worth, you are still not able to buy an equivelant new car for less.
EXAMPLE:
My 1995 9000 Aero 5spd w/TCS. I bought it for $3500, it needed about $1600 in work to get it road worthy. All my repairs for the year add up to about $220. In addition I've tinted the windows, put clear corners on it, bought winter snows and rims, a K&N air filter, JT downpipe, and SQR stage 3 which add up to about $1700. Add it all together and I've spent $7020 on this car.
Where am I going to find a new car that has 306hp, 361 lb-ft of torque that has as cool of an interior, offers the safey, performance, amenities, and utility, and still gets 27 mpg for $7000. A Kia rio cost more than that and is a POS. PLus I could probably sell my car for $7K and not loose a penny. As far as I'm concerned keeping this car is not a waste of money, and I couldn't afford anything new that would come close to matching the smile I get when I drive OJ (my cars name.-It's a black aero that was in a police chase before I got it.)
Got to love it.
