years ago about people that had high mileage cars. The one example I remember was one guy that had a BMW 5 series (say 1980s vintage) with around 300K miles on it. He was spending about $5k per year on maintenance, mostly from an independent mechanic. I added it up and I am spending about $40-50 per month for parts only for each of my two SAAB 9000's over the last two years. One 9000 is a 1990T with 185K miles, and the other is a 1991T with 150K. Interestingly, the average for a 1987 Acura Legend we have with 183K miles has been $50 per month, but it has only seen 5K miles in the last year, so per mile costs have been higher.
The wife's 1998 Honda Accord V6 was doing great until about a year ago when the automatic transmission blew up (95K miles). $3800 for a Jasper rebuilt unit installed. Since then the alternator went ($120) at 110K miles, plus I spent about $300 in parts to replace the timing belt (belt, tensioner, pulleys, water pump) at 105K miles.
I think that most of the people that talk about their Toyotas costing them nothing are really looking at the first 100K miles. After that, the same items start to wear out that we experience-timing belts, pulleys, alternators, water pumps, heater hoses and the like.
There was nothing magic about my wife's alternator. It was made by Delphi, a spin off of General Motors. The brushes were bad, but I could not easily get to them like the Bosch alternator, nor could I find a ready replacement source.
