If you want an early 9K as a project car, and already know these beasts that's one thing. But for your wife's daily driver for 320 miles a week, 16000 a year, you probably need something you can definitely count on. A 22 year old car may not be it.
Follow the money:
$500 for the car
$500 to $800 to get it across the country (this is a WAG, but is ballpark)
Allow $1000 to $1500 for repair and get it rolling type maintenance, assuming no disasters but maybe putting on tires, brakes, hoses, etc, assuming you can do most of the work yourself. On a car with that few miles (assuming it's actually 89K miles) I'd worry that it has been neglected, which sounds possible from your description.
For a couple grand you can get a pretty decent newer 9K that you can test drive and have fully inspected, right in the Boston area. Don't worry so much about rust. The newer 9Ks do pretty well in resisting rust.
