The car is a 96 9000CS, automatic, 94K, recently converted to FPT. ATF has been regularly maintained by dumping from the pan every 10K, starting at 61K.
The problem started suddenly, it would shift just once to 2nd gear at 3000 rpm. There is no further shifting even when I pushed the rpm to 5000. The ATF level is way high, way beyond the 80 degree Celsius level.
Talked to Nat of Eriksson Industries; he suspects a cable issue. I am posting this for 2 reasons.
1. Nat's answer may benefit people with similar problems.
2. Solicit input from this community.
Here is what Nat told me:
A. Moving the throttle cable to test for an increase in resistance. There should be one, followed by a decrease. Mine has no resistance change.
B. Remove the battery and battery try to check behind the transmission for any obvious cable issue. Which goes into the transmission at the back.
C. Put gear selector at "1". Remove the transmission cover and valve body (only undo the large screws at the perimeter, don't touch any other screws)
D. There are two valves in a housing underneath the valve body. The one with a roller is the one to check.
E. It should "move back" after pushing it in. Not knowing how it looks like, I am hazy on this point.
F. This valve is connected to another valve. I surmise that the 2nd valve is connected to the cable.
G. The access to the 2nd valve and cable connection is through a cover at the back of the transmission.
I did not ask Nat any further questions, pending how much and how far I'd go.
Your input would be greatly appreciated. How easy is it to turn this into a much bigger problem?
