Unfortunately there's no OBD-II on this car for my scan tool and I don't have a Tech-II. (Though I've been thinking that with two of these cars to deal with picking up a Tech-II clone might not be a bad idea.) There is definitely no continuity on the pins of the crank sensor, so while there may be other problems it looks like that needs to be replaced regardless.
The no-start problem actually began with a dead battery -- the car had not been used in a few weeks and the battery was flat. I disconnected the battery and charged it overnight. After that the car would crank but not start. I tried the easiest things first: used starting fluid to check for spark and there was none; then swapped out the DIC with one known to work. It was still no go so that's when I started going through Ari's no-start checklist.
Initially that checklist pointed to a faulty ECU, but the engine still would not start when temporarily replacing with a known good unit. Further testing found that the original ECU, despite failing the check engine light test, is triggering the fuel pump and main relay. Failure occurs at the crank sensor test.
That's where it's at now. Fortunately this car is a extra vehicle, it's not one we rely on day-to-day so it has not been imperative to get it back on the road quickly. (My '97 9000 is my daily driver.)
