Diode PN junctions are the most reliable temperature sensors on the planet.
There are two diodes under every Pentium chip on the planet for temperature regulation, and they communicate with the operating system through the SMBus.
If I were making this substitution, I would pick a 2N3055 transistor in a TO-3 package, hermetically sealed from salt and water. Just remember to connect the positive voltage source to the base connection to forward bias the junction.
