Mine started misbehaving a few months ago. Sometimes the key would turn, and sometimes it would not turn without a big struggle. It made no difference how the wheels were turned, whether the ground was level or not, etc.
What I noticed is that normally when you insert the key into the ignition and turn to the right the entire cylinder pushes in about 1/16 inch. When you turn the ignition off AND remove the key the ignition pops out about 1/16 inch. At least after 218K miles that is what mine does.
I didn't have the locksmith lube. I used WD-40 with the little straw to direct the spray around the outer perimeter of the lock cylinder to facilite it popping in and out. Now it works fine as long as I remember to remove the key after turning off the ignition.
If your lock cylinder is stuck at the pushed-in position then the key will not turn for love or money. Lube the perimeter of the cylinder and wiggle the cylinder as much as you can until it will pop in and out again. Sounds weird, but this has worked for me.
