When is a 9k too old to use as a daily driver?

My 1998 9000 has 212,000 miles on it but is in generally good shape. I put a new clutch in it about 18 months ago and installed 4 new tires a year ago ,so I was hoping to keep driving it for a couple more years at least. But a couple of weird breakdowns have me rethinking the wisdom of this. Luckily both of them were very close to home so didn't require a tow.
First the bracket holding the idler pulley snapped clean in two. This is also the alternator and power steering pump bracket. There is no sign of bad pulleys or a bad tensioner that could have caused this so I think it was just age and metal fatigue. The repair wasn't too bad, but a little time consuming - I replaced the alternator voltage regulator when I was in there.
Then last week I hit the brakes and the pedal sank to the floor (a little scary!). Turns out one of the brake lines had rusted through. Fortunately it was one of the few where the OEM line is still available so again I had an awkward, if not technically difficult, repair to deal with.
So for other high mileage 9000 owners in the snowbelt, is this typical of what I will have to deal with over the next couple of years or was I just unlucky? I do keep on top of preventative maintenance items - neither of these issues were really foreseeable (where the brake line rusted through was in a hard to spot place). But despite being pretty on top of maintenance items (I even replaced the bulbs in the seat heater switches recently!), I wonder how long I can keep this running reliably for?
