The click sound you are hearing from behind the dash is probably a relay. Since the click occurs every time you loose power then perhaps the you have a faulty relay. You can take a look at them by removing the glove box. There are 6 torx screws around the perimeter of the glove box with the door open. I think they are T-20. Remove them and pull out the glove box being careful of the wiring for the light. The relay diagram is on top of the glove box. The relays are on a panel above the glovebox that must be lowered. There are now two screws towards the front of the panel that must be removed, then you can swing down the panel so you can see the actualy relays.
I would carefully remove and inspect each one for obvious damage. I'd also remove non-critical ones and drive the car for a while to see if the problem disapears. This would obviously be easier with a known good set of relays.
Of course the problem might not be the relays at all, though the clicking gives that impression. And Swedish Imports is right, electical problems can be darn hard to diagnose. I'm suprised your battery isn't draining if the short is hapened while the car is off as the info seems to imply. If the problem was just a relay then I would suspect the problem would be limited to situations when the car was on. A fuse should blow too with such an extreme short. You might want to check the thick wires going down to the starter and maybe the wires going to the alternator. The insulation on my starter wires is shot from being exposed to oil and I sometimes ground them with my oil filter wrench when changing my oil. If you wire rubbed against a ground occasionally it could produce a big short without tripping a fuse.
By the way, where are you located? I live in Durham about 15 minutes away from Swedish Imports. Let me know if I can help. I don't see many 9ks in the area and I'm always happy to help a fellow owner.
Good luck!
Craig
