76 turbo? Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Mon, 23 Nov 2009 09:10:30 In Reply to: Head advice, Ben, Sun, 22 Nov 2009 03:46:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
That's a rare beast... I thought the only 76 turbo was in the Saab museum in Sweden. In 77, Saab built 100 turbo test cars, then 78 started series production.
A copper head gasket would have to be a performance mod. Not factory for regular production cars.
As for heads, first thing to look for is the three-way thermostat. Take off the thermostat housing from the head, and see if the large square area is all one hole, or if it is separated into two. The latter was a later head, and may be a turbo head. Turbo heads all had the 3-way thermostat (split area on head). The only other difference I recall was the exhaust valves were sodium cooled. I'm away from my manuals, so I can't tell you how to tell the difference. You might have to take the valve out to tell.
I do recall, though, that for 79 or 80 all the 99 motors with Lambda got the sodium valves.
