I know they did that on the 16v heads, I can't recall if the 8v heads did also. I'm thinking not, but I could be wrong.
BUT, that number would be just for the casting or maybe the machined head, not for the entire head assembly (including cams, valves, springs, etc.), so it really doesn't help. For example, the #s machined into the castings for the 9000s 2.3 liter heads (pre 1994) and the 900s 2.1 liter heads (91-93)are the same. But several different head assemblies were made on this one casting (2.3 non-turbo, 2.1 non-turbo, 2.3 turbo, 2.3 LPT...).
